In a recent post on their website, Sainsburys announced a series of packaging changes across its own-brand chicken and fish products, aiming to reduce plastic waste significantly. Below is a summary of the key points of that post.
Pioneering Pulp Cardboard Trays: The retailer is the first in the UK to switch all its own-brand salmon fillet trays to pulp cardboard, resulting in a 70% reduction in plastic and saving 346 tonnes of plastic annually.
Cardboard Trays for Breaded Products: Sainsbury’s is also introducing cardboard trays for its Taste the Difference and by Sainsbury’s breaded chicken lines, saving 300 tonnes of plastic per year. Additionally, the same change for Taste the Difference breaded fish fillets will save 48 tonnes of plastic annually.
Seasonal Products and Recyclability: Throughout the summer, the new packaging will be extended to seasonal chicken favourites, including finger food and BBQ items like breaded goujons, nuggets, and schnitzels. These pulp and cardboard trays are fully recyclable at home, reducing household waste.
Statement from Sainsbury’s: Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation at Sainsbury’s, emphasised the importance of reducing plastic in popular products like salmon. She highlighted that the new packaging across salmon, breaded fish, and chicken will save 694 tonnes of plastic yearly, marking a significant advancement towards the retailer’s plastic reduction goals.
‘Good to Know’ Logo and Other Initiatives: Sainsbury’s has introduced a ‘Good to Know’ logo to help customers identify more sustainable products with reduced plastic packaging. This logo will appear on the new packaging for salmon products. The retailer’s efforts also include replacing plastic trays with cardboard for own-brand steak and swapping plastic punnets for cardboard for mushrooms, saving over 775 tonnes of plastic annually.
These changes are part of Sainsbury’s ongoing commitment to reduce plastic waste and enhance sustainability across its product range.
